How Human Design Became My Map Back to Myself

The first time Human Design was mentioned to me, it was by my coach. I remember thinking, this sounds vague, complicated, and not really for me. None of it made sense, so I just put it to one side.

But like a lot of things in life, it kept showing up — and eventually I was ready to hear it.

Discovering I’m a Manifesting Generator

When I gave it another look, the first thing I learned was that I’m a Manifesting Generator (MG). Suddenly, so many things about my life clicked into place.

MGs are built for variety. We’re fast, multi-passionate, and not designed to pick one lane and stay in it forever. We change our minds, cut corners, pivot quickly, and often leave things unfinished. For years, I thought that meant I lacked discipline or couldn’t “stick at things.” But it turns out, that’s how we’re designed to work.

If something excites me, I can power through it with endless energy. If it doesn’t? No amount of willpower will make it work. MGs are designed to follow energy, not logic or obligation.

The shadow side of that? When we ignore our design, frustration creeps in. And that was me for years.

Years of Frustration

Looking back, that explained so much. I spent years feeling frustrated — with work, with people, with myself. No matter how hard I tried, I never felt like I was getting “there.”

The truth was, I was ignoring how I was actually wired to live and work.

Strategy: To Respond

Every Type has a Strategy — a simple way of making life flow more easily. Mine is to respond.

That means waiting for life to give me something to react to — a conversation, an opportunity, an idea that sparks — rather than pushing, initiating, and forcing things into existence.

For years, I did the opposite. I initiated, controlled, and pushed harder when things didn’t work. And all I got was more frustration.

Experimenting with waiting to respond felt awkward at first, like I wasn’t doing enough. But then I started to notice something: the right people showed up, opportunities landed without the grind, and things began to flow more naturally.

That’s the gift of Strategy — it gives you a practical way to stop fighting yourself.

Authority: Emotional

The next layer is Authority — how you’re designed to make decisions. Mine is Emotional, which means I’m not built for snap judgments.

I need time. I have to ride the wave — the highs, the lows, and everything in between — before I get to real clarity.

For most of my life, I ignored this. I rushed into things, said yes too quickly, and often regretted it later. Now, I pause. I ask myself, “Will this still feel right tomorrow?” That small shift has saved me from so many wrong turns.

If you only take one thing from Human Design, knowing your Authority can be life-changing. It shows you how to make decisions you can actually trust.

The 6/2 Profile

Finally, there’s Profile. Mine is 6/2 — The Role Model / Hermit.

Profiles are made of two numbers:

  • The first number is conscious — it’s the part you’ll usually recognise in yourself.

  • The second number is unconscious — it’s more hidden, but other people will see it in you, even if you don’t.

So for me, the “6” is conscious. I can see the three phases of Line 6 playing out in my life:

  • 0–30: trial and error, learning through lived experience (lots of lessons, often the hard way).

  • 30–50: retreat and reflection, pulling back to process and integrate.

  • 50+: embodied wisdom, becoming the role model who guides others simply by how you live.

The messy first phase? It made sense of so much of my early life.

The “2” is unconscious. That’s the Hermit. I don’t always recognise it in myself, but others do. I need space to recharge and I often have natural gifts I can’t see clearly, though others spot them easily. Out of balance, I hide away. In balance, I honour my need for space without disappearing from the world.

Together, the 6/2 is about learning through experience, stepping back to integrate, and then showing others what’s possible — often without even trying.

Still Learning

Here’s the thing: Human Design isn’t about memorising your chart or sticking yourself in a box. It’s about experimenting with Type, Strategy, and Authority first — the basics that cover 70% of how you operate. When you start there, life genuinely starts to feel easier.

Once you're living those, the real gifts of your design begin to unfold - your centres, gates, channels and even your incarnation cross (life's purpose). These layers combine to make your chart as unique as your fingerprint. And then there's astrological transits - the shifting energies that can influence how you feel and operate day to day.

It’s a huge system. But it always comes back to living it, not just learning it.

I’m still learning. Still catching myself when I fall back into old habits. Still giving myself permission to live the way I’m actually built. But every time I do, life feels lighter and simpler — more mine.

What About You?

This is why I use Human Design in my work now. It gave me a map back to myself — and I’ve seen it do the same for others.

If you’re curious, you can start by downloading your free chart at Jovian Archive or My BodyGraph. All you need is your date, time, and place of birth.
